The Gardens

Surrounding the Winery are maturing plantings, a small stream and pond and large expanses of lawn.

The Winery is reached through an avenue of Plane trees with Pinot Gris grapes either side of the entrance gates. The landscaping offers a peaceful retreat in which visitors can relax, enjoy a glass of wine and a picnic or an Antipasto Platter. Gas barbecues in the gardens are available for use by arrangement. There are also stunning broad rural vistas to enjoy under the wide-open skies of Hawkes Bay’s Western Plains.

Leading up behind the winery is a valley with shady trees, small picnic areas and a babbling stream from a waterfall. Native and exotic plantings cohabit peacefully.

A sheltered Courtyard behind the building has a large circular pond and fountain with mass plantings of the heavily-perfumed old-fashioned rose, Roserie de l’Hay. The winery wall is clothed in a creeper which turns a vivid scarlet in autumn and is an arresting sight. Cabbage trees (cordyline australis) and large leaved succulents add an exotic look to the area.

The grounds are a popular place for wedding photographs and concerts. They have been awarded First Prize in the Hastings District Council’s Garden Awards for Industrial / Commercial Gardens and are truly an oasis in the surrounding summer-brown hills.
