2002 HAWKES BAY GIMBLETT GRAVELS
HOMAGE CHARDONNAY

THE VARIETY
100% Mendoza clone Chardonnay. The first vinyage of our premium Chardonnay, made only in exceptional years. The fruit came from vines planted in 1994. The fruit was thinned to give a crop level of around 1 tonne per acre (approx 20 Hectolitres per Hectare).

VINEYARD LOCATION
Gimblett Gravels, from two company - owned vineyards. Soils consist of river shingle, sand and silt, deposited by the Ngaruroro River. This part of the vineyard is planted where there is more silt and sand.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS
2002 was one of the great vintages in the Gimblett Gravels area due to a fantastic warm, dry Autumn after a temperate summer had caused anxiety. Harvest timing was later and more leisurely than normal with grapes for this wine picked on 1st of April.

WINEMAKING
The handpicked grapes were gently whole-bunched pressed. Only the highest quality light pressings were kept for this wine. The juice was settled for a 6 hour period and then racked to new French oak barrels for fermentation, still retaining some solids. The juice was not inoculated with cultured yeast, so the ferment occurred with indigenous yeast. Following the alcoholic ferment, the wine was allowed to undergo malo-lactic fermentation. The yeast lees were stirred very 10 days or so during the 15 months the wine spent in barrel. The wine was bottled in September 2003, with minimal filtration and fining.
