2008 HAWKES BAY
ARNEIS

Arneis (pronounced “are-Nays”) is an ancient white grape variety originating near Alba in the Piedmont region of north-west Italy. This is our second vintage of this aromatic wine which is uncommon in New Zealand, continuing Trinity Hill's "Tradition of Innovation".

THE VARIETY
95% Arneis, 5% Viognier

VINEYARD LOCATION
Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay, Gimblett Estate vineyard.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS
2008 was an outstanding season for Arneis in the Gimblett Gravels. A hot, dry summer was followed by a relatively cool autumn. Careful vineyard management and attention to detail allowed us to harvest the grapes when the flavour profiles were at their optimum level, yet still retaining good acidity.

WINEMAKING
The grapes were rapidly and gently pressed to produce an elegant, fruit-driven wine with low phenolics.pickup. The juice was cold settled to clarify it and then cool fermented in stainless steel tanks plus some older French oak barrels, to add textural components.
The wine was bottled in June 2008.

THE COLOUR
Light straw with a hint of green.

THE BOUQUET
Delicate aromas of pears and almonds and mineral.

THE PALATE
The palate shows a richness and roundness, balanced with good acidity and minerally flavours. It is not overtly fruity and as such is a great food wine, as the original Italian wines are.

PEAK DRINKING
This style of wine is best consumed relatively young, within 2 - 3 years of harvest.

FOOD MATCHES
Excellent with shellfish and fish such as flounder or sole, with pears or simply as an aperitif wine, well chilled.
Avoid with cheese or strongly herb-flavoured dishes.
