2007 HAWKES BAY
MONTEPULCIANO

Montepulciano is a red grape variety from Italy brought into New Zealand in the 1980s by Allan Clarke of MAF. Trinity Hill’s vines are sourced from that material. This is our fifth vintage made from the Montepulciano and our best yet. It is not intended to be a “serious” wine but we recommend you enjoy it for the moment, in volume, with friends and food.

THE VARIETY
100% Montepulciano

VINEYARD LOCATION
Gimblett Road, Gimblett Gravels of Hawkes Bay.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS
2007 was a great season in Hawkes Bay for Montepulciano. A temperate summer was followed by a fantastic, extended Hawkes Bay Indian Summer. The light crop allowed us to hang the grapes on in good condition until they were physiologically ripe.

WINEMAKING
The hand harvested fruit was destemmed but not crushed. The fermentation took place in closed-top stainless fermenters. The fermenting juice was pumped over the cap twice daily during fermentation. The must was pressed out after a short post-fermentation maceration on skins. The wine was allowed to settle to remove the bulk of the lees in tank and then racked to a mixture of older French and American oak barriques. Regular racking with air took place during around 6 months maturation in barrel. The wine was bottled in February 2007.

THE COLOUR
Medium garnet

THE BOUQUET
Black fruit: cassis and plum

THE PALATE
This is quite typical of the wines from Abruzzi in Central Italy, with spicy blackcurrant and plum flavours with good tannin and acid.

FOOD MATCHES
Hearty stews, pasta and country-style cooking.

PEAK DRINKING
2008 - 2010
