Homage Syrah makes James Suckling's Top 100

We are proud to announce our iconic Homage Syrah has accomplished a significant achievement with a ranking of 11th in James Suckling's Annual Top 100 wines of the year.

James Suckling is an influential US wine critic with three decades of experience as a wine journalist.  His website focuses on reviewing many of the best wines of the world through videos in vineyards and cellars with winemakers, vintners, and owners.  To achieve this he and his team taste through over ten thousand wines each year by using the 100-point scale.  If a wine is rated 96 points or more (A+), he views it as a "must buy".  From these thousands of wines he selects his Top 100 wines of the year.  The position of these wines in the Top 100 is based primarily on their ratings.  Suckling considers all wi nes that have scored 96 points or more during the past year, and have at least 6,000 bottles in production.

In addition to placing 11th the 2010 Homage received 98 points and the following commentary: "The wine by which all other top-tier New Zealand syrah wines have always been judged, this has impressive depth and ripeness, tapping into a spectrum of concentrated dark and red fruits more deeply and more profoundly than most."

We are delighted with this recognition for our iconic wine particularly as we will be launching Homage in the US at the start of 2015.  Chief Winemaker, Warren Gibson says "we only make Homage in the years that allow us to illustrate the absolute best potential of Syrah in the Hawkes Bay.  The whole team works extremely hard to maximise this quality and we are proud that this is being recognised".

Suckling notes on his website that "I ordered the wines according to what I thought were the most exciting; the ones with the wow factor".

2012 Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay clean sweep at Sydney International Wine Competition

We are delighted to announce that our 2012 Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay has won Champion Wine of Show at the Sydney International Wine Competition 2014

This achievement comes just 2 years after picking up the same accolade in 2012 with our 2010 Gimblett Gravels Syrah.

As well as winning the Champion trophy the 2012 Chardonnay also picked up trophies in it's subsequent classes
- Best medium bodied dry white table wine
- Best white wine

Our 2012 Hawkes Bay Syrah also won Blue Gold, Top 100 recognition in this competition.

We are proud and delighted to be acknowledged at this show, particularly as the wines are judged with food not just on their technical merits.

The Champion Trophy perfectly demonstrates that wines of elegance and finesse can result from cooler more challenging vintages.

Trinity Hill Headlines at Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2012

Trinity Hill has triumphed again with its Gimblett Gravels Syrah (2011) and Tempranillo (2010).  Both of these wine were awarded Pure Gold Medals at the 2012 Air NZ Wine Awards.  In Wellington at the Wine Awards Dinner November 24th, the Trinity Hill 2010 Gimblett Gravels Tempranillo was awarded the Trophy for the New Zealand Winegrowers Champion Other Red Wine.

The results for the show medals were announced 14 November and included news of our other medal winners;
  • 2011 Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay - Pure Silver
  • 2011 Gimblett Gravels Viognier - Pure Silver
  • 2011 Gimblett Gravels Arneis - Pure Bronze
  • 2011 Hawkes Bay "The Trinity " - Pure Bronze
  • 2011 Hawkes Bay Syrah - Pure Bronze
  • 2012 Hawkes Bay Rose - Pure Bronze

These results are very pleasing particularly for our 2011 vintage red where they were matched against vintages of 2010 and earlier.  We feel it demonstrates the consistent strength our winemaking regardless of vintage challenges.

2011 Gimblett Gravels Syrah launched with great reviews

The first of the wine reviews are starting to arrive for the 2011 Gimblett Gravels Syrah.  This is the type of reviews we look forward to; 91/100 and 4.5 Stars

A refined example of syrah, the bouquet is pristine and fragrant with red plum, blueberry, floral and subtle spice notes. It's juicy and vibrant on the palate with excellent focus and silky texture, finishing long and elegantly dry. It should develop beautifully. At its best: 2013 to 2018. Sam Kim, Wine Orbit August 2012

Trinity Hill Sweeps the TOP 100 at the Sydney International Wine Competition

25 November 2011

Trinity Hill has taken five of the Top 100 Wine Awards at the 2012 Sydney International Wine Competition.  In addition to this impressive result, the 2010 Gimblett Gravels Syrah has been selected in the Top 3 of its class and is eligible for the Trophy.

Our Top 100 Blue Gold Medal winners are;

  • 2010 Gimblett Gravels Syrah
  • 2010 Gimblett Gravels Tempranillo
  • 2010 Gimblett Gravels Viognier
  • 2010 Hawkes Bay Syrah
  • 2010 Hawkes Bay Merlot

Also awarded a Blue Gold Medal is our 2010 Gimblett Gravels Noble Viognier.

“All of our winning wines are from the fabulous 2010 vintage”.  Warren Gibson, Trinity Hill’s Chief winemaker says, “I believe it is the freshness of fruit and balance of savoury acidity and tannin in these wines that makes them stand out, particularly when matched with food”.

“Our wines account for 5% of the Top 100 and that is an outstanding result for us”, says John Hancock, President and Founder.  “We are particularly pleased with these awards as they are based on technical merit AND how effectively the wines complement food.  We have always prided ourselves on how well our wines match to food and this is a strong acknowledgement of that”.

10 November 2011

Another great vintage of Trinity Hill’s flagship Syrah was launched in Auckland today at a Media and Trade presentation followed by a sell-out public tasting.  John Hancock, Trinity Hill’s President and Founder, unveiled the new vintage of Homage.  An earlier vintage was the first Hawkes Bay red wine to gain a 95 point accolade in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
According to John, “it is the best expression of Syrah in our terroir and is based on our oldest vines.  2009 is seen as a great vintage for Hawkes Bay Syrah and this is a fitting tribute to Gerard Jaboulet”.

Vintages of Homage are only bottled if it is up to our highest standards. From the first release until the current 2011 production, we will only release wines from 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010.  2011 is still being considered.

Warren Gibson, Trinity Hill’s Chief Winemaker, feels the 2009 Homage “encapsulates the very best of the winery’s efforts – the spoilt child of the family.  Every effort has been made from pruning to bottle to deliver the ultimate expression of Gimblett Gravels Syrah.”

“I find it an absolutely delicious wine.  It is right up there as one of the very, very best red wines from our cellar to date.  I love drinking it already although I have put plenty away in my cellar as the 2009 is going to get so much better with bottle age” says Warren.

Trinity Hill Homage Syrah is listed in some of the world’s very top restaurants and has received many accolades in a very short space of time.  It is regarded as one of New Zealand’s top Syrahs.

If you would like to purchase HOMAGE, click HERE and buy online.  Or visit our Cellar Door for a true Trinity Hill experience.  It is available throughout New Zealand at fine wine stores.

Trinity Hill wins Trophy for 2011 Sauvignon Blanc.... AGAIN !

18 October 2011

Hawkes Bay Wine Industry came together at the A&P Wine Awards Night in Hastings to celebrate excellence in the local wine making.  Trinity Hill was awarded the Trophy (Best in Class) for its 2011 Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc.  This is the second time we have received this honour proving we are consistently delivering a Hawkes Bay style of Sauvignon Blanc which differs from the "other island" style.  The 2010 Gimblett Gravels Syrah and 2010 Hawkes Bay Merlot were both awarded Gold Medals.  In addition we received a Silver Medal and 5 Bronze Medals.  All of our wines submitted received medals....congratulations to the team.

The industry was well represented and a good evening was had by all under the marquis (thank goodness as it POURED rain at one point) in Waikoko Gardens.

"Bravo! This is very clever..." says Jancis Robinson

6 October 2011 Jancis Robinson reviews Gimblett Gravels Bordeaux Blends and Syrah - Vintage 2008s and 2009s.  Below are the reviews for Trinity Hill wines.

Trinity Hill, The Gimblett, Gimblett Gravels 2009 Hawke's Bay
17.5 / 20   Drink 2013-2020 -  38% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec - there's Meritage for you!   Very dark.   Sappy and appetising immediately on the nose.   Round and charming (a bit like its maker?).  Lots of life here with the emphasis more on acidity than tannin.   A hint of char and tarmacadam - nothing remotely fruity about this.  Serious stuff designed for the long term with real reverberation on the palate.  Such energy!

Trinity Hill, The Gimblett, Gimblett Gravels 2008 Hawke's Bay
17.5 / 20  Drink 2011-2020  43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec, 3%
Cabernet Franc.  Dark crimson. Interesting complex, intriguing, well balanced bouquet.  Lovely balance.  This wine spreads across the palate in the most satisfying way.  Really appetising and beautifully balanced. You could enjoy this already but there are tannins lurking underneath.

Trinity Hill, Homage, Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2009 Hawke's Bay
18 / 20 Drink 2011-2017 Another ridiculously heavy bottle from the land of greens. Now this is serious on the nose - I'm tempted to make comparisons with Hermitage here! Great intensity and lovely silky texture but serious depth.  Bravo!  This is very clever, because it could be enjoyed already and yet it clearly has one heck of a long way to go.  Meaty, dense and manly – a great lesson in the Syrahness of Syrah.  Lip smackingly good.  Luscious texture.

Trinity Hill, Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2008 Hawke's Bay
17 / 20  Drink 2011-2017 - Informative back label tells us some Viognier was co- fermented with the Syrah and then three weeks of post fermentation maceration and 14 months in barriques followed. Mid ruby.  Meaty, appetising nose - no shy retiring flower but a very creditable warm climate Syrah (not Shiraz).  Lots of fun and very fine tannins.  Well made.  Maybe JohnHancock's name does deserve its prominence on the label, as though he were a particularly famous film director... Very toothsome. Admirably dry finish clearly marks this wine out for the table.
